The Kansas Department of Health Center for Health and Environmental Statistics reports:
In Kansas in 2008
- Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death of Kansans of all ages, with 350 deaths.
- Despite the small overall decline in suicide deaths, there was an increase in suicide deaths of 15-24 year olds: from 59 to 69.

In Kansas in 2007
- Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death of Kansans of all ages, with 380 deaths
- Homicide was the 15th leading cause, with 114 deaths
In Kansas in 2006
- Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death of Kansans of all ages
- The 2nd leading cause for 15-24 year olds
- The 3rd leading cause for 25-44 year olds
- The suicide deaths of 377 Kansans resulted in 12,345 total years of life lost.
- The average age at death of those 377 Kansans was 44.5; with the average for men of 43.8 and the average for women of 47.5

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBSS)
A representative sample of 9-12 graders from across Kansas reported that they had experienced the following with the 12 months before taking the survey:
- 25.0% had felt so sad or hopeless everyday for at least two weeks in a row that they stopped doing some usual activities
- 13.9% had seriously considered attempting suicide
- 9.6% had made a plan to attempt suicide
- 6.7% had attempted suicide one or more times
- 2.1% had made a suicide attempt that resulted in an injury, poisoning, or overdose that had to be treated by a doctor or nurse
A representative sample of 9-12 graders from across the U.S. reported that they had experienced the following with the 12 months before taking the survey:
- 28.5% had felt so sad or hopeless everyday for at least two weeks in a row that they stopped doing some usual activities
- 14.5% had seriously considered attempting suicide
- 11.3% had made a plan to attempt suicide
- 6.9% had attempted suicide one or more times
- 2.0% had made a suicide attempt that resulted in an injury, poisoning, or overdose that had to be treated by a doctor or nurse
